When other work may be needed
- Repointing does not repair unrelated tile, valley or flashing defects.
- Caps with failed support may require removal and rebedding.
- The visible ridge line alone does not establish the cause of an indoor leak.
Before you request a quote
Provide your suburb, roof type if known, when the issue occurs, previous repairs and photographs taken safely. Ask for the findings and an explained written scope. Licence requirements depend on the work; verify the appropriate contractor with Service NSW.
Prepare a useful request for quotation
For this service, these details help define the assessment:
- Whether mortar cracks, loose caps or ceiling leaks have been noticed.
- Earlier repointing or roof restoration details.
- Roof height and whether the affected ridge is visible from the ground.
What to ask the quote to explain
Ask which ridge lengths need repointing, whether bedding needs repair and how loose existing material will be addressed.

Common homeowner questions
What is the difference between rebedding and repointing?
Rebedding addresses the supporting mortar beneath the ridge caps. Repointing addresses the finishing and fixing layer at the joints. An assessment should state whether the support remains sound or both stages are needed.
Can new pointing go over loose old material?
The substrate condition is part of the assessment. The proposed scope should explain how unsuitable material will be addressed and whether the cap support needs repair, rather than relying on a cosmetic covering.
Will repointing stop every tiled roof leak?
No. It deals with a particular part of a tiled roof. If there is a leak, the water entry route still needs to be established so work on the ridge is linked to an identified defect.
