When other work may be needed
- Gutter cleaning alone does not establish that drainage capacity is suitable.
- Underground stormwater and regulated plumbing work need the appropriate licensed trade.
- Fascia or eaves damage may require additional building work.
Before you request a quote
Provide your suburb, roof type if known, when the issue occurs, previous repairs and photographs taken safely. Ask for the findings and an explained written scope. Licence requirements depend on the work; verify the appropriate contractor with Service NSW.
Prepare a useful request for quotation
For this service, these details help define the assessment:
- Which gutter run spills or leaks, and whether this happens after cleaning.
- Whether the request is cleaning, a joint repair or a replacement assessment.
- Storeys, nearby trees, gutter guards and access restrictions.
What to ask the quote to explain
Ask which runs, outlets and downpipes are included, how debris will be removed and whether drainage faults need a separate scope.

Do not climb onto a wet or damaged roof. Keep clear of sagging ceilings and electrical hazards. For a life-threatening emergency call 000; for NSW SES storm or flood emergency assistance call 132 500.
Common homeowner questions
Why do my gutters overflow after they have been cleaned?
The next investigation should consider outlets, downpipes, gutter condition and the drainage arrangement. Describe exactly where overflow occurs. A clear gutter is only one part of a roof drainage system.
Can only the leaking section of gutter be replaced?
A section repair may be possible, depending on the profile, connections and surrounding condition. Ask whether the proposed section will work with existing outlets and whether colour or profile matching is limited.
Do gutter guards remove the need for maintenance?
Do not assume they do. The chosen system and the conditions around the property affect ongoing care. Access to inspect gutters and outlets should still be considered when discussing a maintenance plan.
Will gutter cleaning stop water spilling onto the eaves?
It can help if a blockage is causing the overflow. If water still spills over after cleaning, the gutter outlet, downpipe, joints or gutter condition may need attention. Damaged eaves boards may also need a separate repair.
Why do two gutter quotes differ even for the same length?
Length alone does not define the work. Compare the gutter profile and material, number of corners and outlets, downpipes, brackets, access setup, removal of old parts and any fascia repairs. Ask both contractors to identify the same runs and exclusions before comparing totals.
Why do gutters overflow during a downpour?
Leaves and sediment may restrict the gutter or outlet. A blocked downpipe, poor fall or damaged connection can also be involved. Explain where water spills and whether the gutter was recently cleaned; the assessment should follow the drainage route rather than assume another clean is enough.
